When the history of the Flint water crisis is written decades from now, many names will appear—scientists, physicians, attorneys, activists, journalists, and government officials. Yet among the elected leaders who consistently questioned what was happening to Flint’s drinking water, one name stands apart: Councilman Eric B. Mays .

Long before the national media arrived and before government agencies acknowledged the magnitude of the disaster, Eric Mays was demanding answers. While others accepted official assurances that Flint’s water was safe, Mays openly challenged city and state officials, insisting that residents’ concerns deserved to be heard and investigated. His willingness to confront authority made him one of the earliest and most recognizable elected voices in what would become one of America’s worst public health disasters.

The Flint water crisis began in April 2014 after the city’s water supply was switched from Detroit’s treated water system to the Flint River as a cost-saving measure. Eric Mays never allowed the issue to become merely political.

To him, the crisis was personal.

He understood that behind every contaminated water sample was a family forced to question whether their children were safe. Behind every discolored faucet was a senior citizen wondering whether they could trust the water coming into their own home.
